About the car
Presented at the 1951 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Mercedes-Benz 220 (W187) boasted an advanced specification that contrasted with its elegant, albeit somewhat conservative, styling. Designed around a rigid chassis (made from oval-section tubular steel), it was equipped with fully independent suspension (transverse spring at the front, oscillating axle with coil springs at the rear), a four-speed manual gearbox with steering column shift and hydraulic drum brakes. Powered by a new 2195cc in-line six-cylinder engine with overhead camshaft control (OHC), it developed around 80 hp and 14.5 kgfm of torque, and was supposedly capable of reaching 145 km/h. A 2+2 model, the top-of-the-line Cabriolet A variant was considerably expensive. Thus, when production ended in 1955, it is estimated that only 1,278 units were manufactured.
